Being the organizing nut that I am, I try to de-clutter at every turn. I’m not always successful, but I do try to keep things pared down as much as I can. Moving 4 times in the past 5 years has helped!!
I do have to confuse I have not always been this way, I grew up in a cluttered house with two pack rat parents (who I dearly love) so it has taken some time (about 30 years, celebrated our 30th anniversary yesterday) to really learn to appreciate the beauty of not living with clutter. It’s truly does bring peace to your home!
Now don’t get me wrong, I am far from perfect and I would probably cringe if you opened my kitchen junk drawer, but I am a work in progress and feel pretty good about it!! (:
Today’s Tip ~
Start Small!
Start with a drawer, maybe as Donna suggested, your kitchen gadget drawer. As I sit here and type this, I know for a fact that I have two can openers in my drawer. I really don’t need both of them, but they are. So for starters, I’m putting one in my “give-a-way” box.

Happy anniversary sunshine !!!
I'll start decluttering tomorrow when the kids are back in school.

Happy Anniversary!
I have boxes, cupboards and shelves of thngs that were my mom's. She passed away 19 years ago. They are not things that I use but there are memories when I see them. The downside is we use all of the bedrooms in our house as bedrooms so there is not much space left over for extras. I know these are just "things". I have thought many times of paring down. I think I will ask each of the kids to pick something that was hers and take a good look at what is left. I am thinking taking some pictures to remind me since I don't use any of these things may be a good idea.
Happy Birthday Carolyn!!!!
Thanks Nola :o) !
WOW! 30 years! Congratulations Nola! And I was happy we are making the 2 month mark tomorrow! lol! Thanks for giving us newbies something to strive for! ;-) About the study, I went through my house and realized that I don't have that much extra stuff. I kind of weeded through it when we moved in because we have no extra space, but I am a pack rat by nature so this may come in handy in a couple years when i'm overflowing with "stuff"!
hi everyone,
happy anniversaries to nola and sarah and happy birthday carolyn!
i need some advise. i have tried to declutter thousands of times. but my children and husband are all packrats!!! if it's old it's an antique (yeah, right my stuff is old but i guarantee, it's not worth diddly squat!) anhow, i'm not "adhd" oh! look at the rabbit! LOL!!! anyway, i have tried to get michael to go thur his clothes for 10 years, yes ladies i said 10 years. he has clothes we bought in Jamaica on our honeymoon (that's almost 20 years ago) i guarantee they don't fit, but he just say's i "shrink eveything" and when i try to dejunk the kid's stuff (when they are not around) they go thru the trash and take it back out. I have just learned to love my packrats as they are, but i am open for any suggestions and or ideas!!!
looking forward to your ideas!
bye for now,
missy bailey
Happy anniversary Nola!
Missy--maybe your family would enjoy having a garage sale so that they could see some returns for the things they don't need. You could also suggest donating items to a local homeless shelter, etc.
I know it's hard when someone just doesn't want to part with something! I think for many people it helps them to feel more secure.
